The Camp Horizons Summer Camp organized by Overbrook Academy has
been designed to give girls ages 8-14 the opportunity to
increase foreign language skills, develop their talents in a chosen
discipline, as well as expand their horizons by way of
our thematically structured four week program.
Through the international
diversity of our camp, each girl learns the customs and
culture of others through developing and lasting friendships with girls
of diverse nationalities.
In the morning the girls
take interactive language classes: English for ESL speakers and Spanish
for English speakers. Those who excel both in Spanish and
English can take French classes. After language class the campers
head out for their camp activities.
The camp
is divided into four theme weeks. The girls rotate through
each set of activities so that everyone has a chance
to perform all the activities. Throughout the four weeks the
campers win awards and special recognition for their effort in
the activities and good behavior. This motivates them to live
camp to the fullest and appreciate the positive and formative
atmosphere that the counselors and staff create.
The themes weeks
include:
• Olympic Week. This week of activities consists in
a professional sports programs in which expert athletes teach the
girls to play soccer, tennis, track and field, basketball, and
volley ball. These sports take place at Wheeler Camp which
is a licensed camping/sports facility.
• Camping Week. This
also takes place at Wheeler Camp. This week involves learning
survival skills, camping techniques, and outdoor nature activities.
• Water Week. Like
the name suggests this is a full week of water
sports. The girls are taken to local beaches and lakes
to learn to surf, canoe, kayak, and sail. They also
enjoy games at a nearby water park.
• Arts and
Media Week. This week is dedicated to learning how to
perform on a stage. A professional theatre teacher instructs the
students on how to act. As they learn they put
together a musical which they then perform for all the
girls and staff at the end of the
