Apostolic Projects
One of the major ways the students are able to
culturally enrich themselves and share what they receive in their
spiritual formation is by carrying out weekly community service. This
opportunity allows them to give their time to different parishes
and nursing homes around the Providence area. The students organize
catechism classes and activities for the younger children every Sunday
in 7 different parishes. The students also make weekly visits
to the local nursing homes where they spend time interacting
with the patients.
In addition, the Overbrook Students
have been members of the Diocese’s Human Life Guild. They
organize and participate weekly in prolife activities. Some of their
favorite past prolife activities have been to organize and participate
in prayer campaigns for life, conferences given by prolife speakers
to which they invite friends and special guest, and food
baskets which they take responsibility for filling and then give
to the Mother of Life Center to be distributed to
pregnant women in need. The students have said that 2
unforgettable moments of their stay in Rhode Island have been
when they organized and participated in a concert given by
Tony Melendez, and to have met and talked with Immaculee
Ilibagiza after one of her conferences. The different service projects
that the Overbrook students carry out gives them the opportunity
to meet numerous and dedicated people whose work for the
Diocese of Providence. It also teaches them that by serving
and giving the best of themselves they can become real
members of the community and make a contribution that lasts
even after they have returned to their countries of origin.
